Krea compute and growth docket#
Status: Decision log Scope: Public compute, acquisition and monetization evidence; not a hardware inventory.
2026-10-04 — Shared clusters and differentiated creative tools#
Takeaway#
Krea describes an integrated cluster/scheduler strategy, supplemented by external inference, rather than a simple retail inference reseller. Its free and relaxed offers sit alongside proprietary creative tools and substantial financing. Hardware title and the cost advantage of this arrangement remain undisclosed.
Compute and procurement#
Direct engineering disclosure, 2026-08-05: research and production share GPU clusters; Krea prioritizes GPU/fabric quality when procuring research clusters. Research can displace inference onto external providers through Virtual Kubelet adapters. The authors describe buying clusters, but do not establish ownership of every GPU, contract structure, fleet size or locations. Krea engineering article.
Direct engineering disclosure, 2026-08-07: Kubernetes scheduling favors local cluster utilization, moves inference out when capacity is full and brings it back when capacity returns. Kueue supports training, non-offloadable inference, reclaimable low-priority work and external inference queues; dynamic taints and controlled eviction manage placement. This is a mechanism for utilization and overflow control, not a disclosed cost-per-image result. Scheduler article.
Supplier relationship: Together AI publishes a testimonial from Krea's co-founder about supporting realtime image/video generation. This establishes a relationship, not Together's exclusivity, Krea's precise contract, GPU SKUs or the identity of every offload destination. Together AI.
Acquisition and monetization#
Published offer, read 2026-10-04: free access advertises 100 compute units daily without a card. Paid plans combine a compute-unit balance, broader models/features, higher concurrency and additional unit packs. The pricing page advertises unlimited relaxed generation with supported in-house image models after the unit allocation is exhausted—not unlimited access to every third-party model or video service. Pricing.
The 2026-09-21 official free-use guide explicitly excludes relaxed generation and the full model/video library from Free. Its paid tier names/prices do not fully align with the current pricing page; do not reuse the guide's Basic-price example as today's checkout offer. Official guide.
Growth narrative, company-reported 2025-04-07: Krea attributed its prior fourteen months to rapid product iteration and organic adoption, reporting 20 million users and twentyfold revenue growth; it did not define the users as MAU or disclose absolute revenue. It also announced $83 million cumulative funding and an in-house research lab focused on creative quality/control. These are historical, unaudited company claims. They do not isolate the contribution of free compute. Funding and product announcement.
Inference: realtime interaction and differentiated in-house models give users a reason to discover and revisit the product; free units reduce trial friction, while paid relaxed access can improve ongoing subscription value. The public engineering posts do not prove that the customer-facing relaxed queue directly maps to the internal low-priority Kueue queue, or that relaxed jobs never incur external-provider charges.
Implication and next evidence#
Study capacity borrowing, overflow/repatriation and model-specific relaxed eligibility. Do not copy research-first priority into our paid-work-first lanes, or infer electricity-only pricing from the offer. Our free/relaxed lane retains its no-rented-spill boundary.
Unresolved: legal owned/leased split, committed versus usage-priced external capacity, current utilization, relaxed spill policy, successful-generation cost, active-user definition, free-to-paid conversion and cohort retention. A matched workflow benchmark and a documented relaxed-queue policy would be more useful than its cumulative user headline.
