Tier-2 AMD 16 GB GPU node procurement#
Status: Current procurement recommendation; obtain a written complete-system quote before purchase Last verified: 2026-09-29 Canonical for: the AMD host BOM, complete-node economics, and quote gates for the <=16 GB workload tier Not a purchase record: no tier-2 node has been ordered in this document
Recommendation#
Keep the tier-2 architecture, but buy it as a deliberately lean complete system, not as the tier-1 RTX 5090 platform with a cheaper GPU and not around a standalone RTX 5080 at RM8,089–RM8,790.
The default host is:

Use the Colorful iGame RTX 5080 Ultra OC 16 GB V2-V Black at RM6,799 as the default, subject to written 3+1-year local warranty and an added support bracket. The exact-model evidence shows credible 10+4+3-phase MPS power delivery, a vapor chamber, eight heatpipes and three 101 mm fans. Choose the ordinary Zotac RTX 5080 Solid Core OC at RM7,069 when its shorter card, included stand, connector seating light or written 3+2-year local warranty matters more than the RM270 difference. Its cooling is adequate, but exact Core VRM parts are not published and owner reports create a non-quantified fan-bearing risk. The full evidence audit is in the RTX 5080 board-partner review.
If the RM8,089 OC-20 offer is the 20th Anniversary ZT-B50800J2S-10P, it uses the regular Core technical
base. Its titanium finish, magnetic backplate and ARGB stand do not justify RM1,020 for server longevity.
The practical purchase sequence is:
- Get written complete-system quotes for both the RM6,799 Colorful and RM7,069 ordinary Zotac using the same host above.
- Confirm exact GPU part number, in-stock status, local warranty handler and term, and that the PSU's native 12V-2x6 cable will be used.
- Resolve 32 versus 64 GB with the cgroup experiment before duplicating the build. If a node must be ordered first, 64 GB is the conservative configuration; 32 GB is the value configuration only for workloads that pass the gate below.
No Intel CPU or motherboard is considered. The Ryzen 5 7500F already exposes the CPU-direct PCIe 5 links the node needs.
Price evidence and scope#
All component prices above come from the immutable IdealTech capture
2026-09-28T065601Z. The source says its
price list was updated on 2026-09-26 at 13:46 and labels its discounts as build-rig or returning-customer
upgrade prices. A fresh retrieval on 2026-09-29 produced the same 3,376 rows and the same raw-response SHA-256,
b00a33045d0bec39257bd92a6120edbafc05dc8c16e59cef4b445368ea1a2888. That establishes catalog stability,
not stock availability or quote validity.
The three RTX 5080 prices supplied by the founder are standalone offers:
| Standalone offer | Price |
|---|---|
| ZOTAC RTX5080 SOLID CORE OC-20 | RM8,089 |
| Gigabyte RTX 5080 Gaming OC | RM8,399 |
| MSI RTX 5080 Gaming Trio OC | RM8,790 |
The catalog's .ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX5080 SOLID CORE OC at RM7,069 is a different price observation and
may be a different physical SKU. OC-20 may denote Zotac's 20th Anniversary version; require the complete
manufacturer part number on both quotes. Do not describe the RM7,069 builder listing as obtainable standalone
or substitute it silently for the RM8,089 offer.
Prices exclude delivery, operating system and any assembly charge not included in the written quote. The catalog is evidence for comparison, not authority to place an order.
Why this is not the tier-1 platform#
The tier-1 common platform was chosen for a 575 W RTX 5090, 9950X host work, expansion and high-capacity service duties. Repeating it for a 16 GB resident-image node would buy capacity that the measured workload does not use.
At current catalog prices, an approximation of that platform costs RM17,033 before the GPU: Ryzen 9 9950X, X870E Tomahawk, 64 GB RAM, two Samsung drives, 360 mm AIO, Fractal North XL and 1,200 W Seasonic Vertex PX. Adding the RM7,069 builder Zotac RTX 5080 produces RM24,102; even omitting the separate OS drive leaves about RM22,703. Both exceed the RM18,282 maximum complete-node price at which an RTX 5080 matches paid PC2's Krea capex per warm run/hour.
Standardize the fleet where it matters operationally—Linux image, NVIDIA driver/CUDA stack, ComfyUI build, filesystems, telemetry, native power-cable rules and acceptance tests—not by duplicating unused tier-1 component headroom.
Why the B850M board is the correct PCIe 5 answer#
The storage-to-GPU cold path is the reason to retain CPU-direct PCIe 5, but it does not require X870E. AMD specifies that the Ryzen 5 7500F has PCIe 5.0 and 28 total/24 usable native lanes. With Ryzen 7000/9000, Gigabyte specifies the B850M FORCE as:
- one CPU-direct PCIe 5.0 x16 GPU slot;
M2A_CPU, PCIe 5.0 x4;M2B_CPU, PCIe 4.0 x4;- a third chipset-connected M.2 slot at PCIe 4.0 x2; and
- 2.5 GbE, Wi-Fi 6E and two DIMM slots supporting up to 128 GB.
This gives the GPU and primary model SSD independent CPU-direct links at their full advertised widths. An X870E board does not make the x4 SSD link or x16 GPU link wider and has no demonstrated application-level benefit here.
The Gigabyte B650EM FORCE WIFI6E at RM579 has the same useful CPU-direct Gen5 x16 GPU and Gen5 x4 primary M.2
topology. It is only RM50 cheaper, while the catalog lists it twice with ambiguous [COMING] and [EXCLUSIVE]
labels. The unmarked B850M FORCE is the cleaner quote default. If IdealTech confirms the B650EM is in stock
and materially discounts the final quote, it is electrically sufficient.
Component reasoning#
CPU and cooling#
Our Krea process used about 1.04 CPU cores on the measured RTX 5070 Ti host, and warm throughput remained tightly clustered across substantially different host CPUs. AMD specifies the 7500F as six cores/twelve threads, 65 W, with a Wraith Stealth cooler. The included cooler makes the RM79 tower technically optional; keep the CR-1000 MAX in the BOM because its six heatpipes and 120 mm fan buy cheap thermal and acoustic margin for an always-on node.
RAM: the unresolved RM2,800 decision#
The exact benchmark traces, sampled every 200 ms, show:
| Workload | Highest process RSS across measured consumer hosts | Swap |
|---|---|---|
| Krea 2 | 20,312,712 KiB = 19.37 GiB | 0 |
| MiniMax H3 | 48,166,388 KiB = 45.94 GiB | 0 |
These are observations, not capacity tests. Hosts had about 64 GB and no run imposed a 32 GB limit. Therefore:
- 32 GB is a plausible Krea-only value build and saves RM2,800 per node;
- it is not yet proven safe for Krea under OS, worker and monitoring overhead; and
- it is not a MiniMax configuration given the observed 45.94 GiB process peak.
Run the same RTX 5080, same workflow and same cold/warm protocol under 32, 48 and 64 GB cgroup memory limits. The 32 GB configuration passes only with zero OOMs, zero swap, stable cold and warm p95 latency, and enough headroom for the service processes. IdealTech lists no 48 GB kit, so that point is experimental rather than a catalog BOM. Use 64 GB for MiniMax/offload or until Krea passes at 32 GB.
Model storage#
The selected TiPlus9100 is the lowest-cost catalog drive that preserves the intended CPU-direct Gen5 model path. The manufacturer specification lists Xtacking 4.0 TLC, PCIe 5.0 x4, up to 12,000/10,700 MB/s for 2 TB, 1,200 TBW and five years, but it is DRAMless. At RM1,799 it costs RM400 more than the MSI M482 2 TB Gen4 TLC and RM1,050 less than the Samsung 9100 Pro 2 TB in the same list.
The premium is defensible for this node because cold model movement is a product goal and the board already
provides the direct Gen5 link. It is not evidence that sequential label speed translates one-for-one into
lower load time: our same-path experiments found that storage, page cache, filesystem, CPU and host-to-device
transfer form one pipeline. Install it in M2A_CPU under the board heatsink; at acceptance verify PCIe
5.0 x4 / 32 GT/s, sustained temperature, actual model-reader throughput and cold p95.
Before ordering, require written confirmation of the Malaysian warranty/RMA handler. If that is absent, substitute the MSI M482 and accept the slower Gen4 ceiling rather than owning an unsupported SSD. Start with one drive and one filesystem. Add a separate OS drive only after measured I/O contention or an operational recovery requirement justifies it; do not use RAID 0.
PSU and chassis#
The Corsair RM850x costs only RM30 more than the RM850e in the captured list, has a ten-year listed warranty and provides a native 12V-2x6 lead. Independent Cybenetics testing records an ATX 3.1 excursion pass, 90.944% average efficiency at 230 V, 21.37 dBA average noise, 25.82 mV 12 V ripple and 25 ms hold-up. It is the better long-life purchase. Use only the PSU's own native cable; do not mix modular cables or use a GPU adapter. The side-connector RM850x Shift is unsuitable for this case layout.
The Antec P30 Air includes two 140 mm front fans, two 120 mm reverse shroud fans and one 120 mm rear fan, with up to 405 mm GPU and 175 mm CPU-cooler clearance. Its direct lower intake is useful for a sustained GPU workload and both candidate RTX 5080 cards fit. It is preferred over the same-price FLUX M because the conventional PSU layout leaves more cable room.
Complete-node economics#
The measured three-host means are 406.83 warm Krea runs/hour for the RTX 5070 Ti and 462.61 for the RTX 5080. The RTX 5080 advantage is 13.72% for Krea and 17.68% for MiniMax. These measurements are GPU-class evidence, not an assertion that every board partner card has identical thermals under continuous service.
Krea-led nodes#
| GPU offer | 32 GB node | RM per Krea run/hour | 64 GB node | RM per Krea run/hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colorful RTX 5070 Ti Battle AX, builder RM5,499 | RM11,762 | RM28.91 | RM14,562 | RM35.79 |
| Zotac RTX 5070 Ti Solid SFF OC, builder RM5,899 | RM12,162 | RM29.89 | RM14,962 | RM36.78 |
| Colorful RTX 5080 Ultra OC, builder RM6,799 | RM13,062 | RM28.24 | RM15,862 | RM34.29 |
| Zotac RTX 5080 Solid Core OC, builder RM7,069 | RM13,332 | RM28.82 | RM16,132 | RM34.87 |
| Zotac RTX 5080 OC-20, standalone RM8,089 | RM14,352 | RM31.02 | RM17,152 | RM37.08 |
| Gigabyte RTX 5080 Gaming OC, standalone RM8,399 | RM14,662 | RM31.69 | RM17,462 | RM37.75 |
| MSI RTX 5080 Gaming Trio OC, standalone RM8,790 | RM15,053 | RM32.54 | RM17,853 | RM38.59 |
All complete RTX 5080 options remain below PC2's RM18,282 Krea equality ceiling. That means tier 2 still makes sense relative to the paid RTX 5090 node. It does not mean every 5080 is the best purchase within tier 2: at standalone pricing, a cheaper 5070 Ti has better Krea capex/throughput.
RTX 5080 card-price break-even against RTX 5070 Ti#
For a common host cost H, reference RTX 5070 Ti card price P, and measured throughput:
maximum RTX 5080 card price = (H + P) * (462.61 / 406.83) - H
| Reference offer | 32 GB host: Krea / MiniMax | 64 GB host: Krea / MiniMax |
|---|---|---|
| Colorful RTX 5070 Ti at RM5,499 | RM7,112 / RM7,578 | RM7,496 / RM8,073 |
| Zotac RTX 5070 Ti at RM5,899 | RM7,567 / RM8,049 | RM7,950 / RM8,544 |
MiniMax is shown to expose the economics only; its observed 45.94 GiB RSS makes the 32 GB host infeasible. The builder Colorful at RM6,799 and ordinary builder Zotac at RM7,069 are inside both useful Krea boundaries. The RM8,089 standalone Zotac is outside the Krea boundaries, though inside MiniMax's 64 GB boundary relative to the Zotac 5070 Ti. For a Krea-led fleet, buy the 5070 Ti rather than paying RM8,089+ for a 5080.
Board-partner premium and electricity#
The ordinary Zotac is RM270 above the Colorful builder card and rated at 360 W rather than 380 W. At 60% utilization over three years and the current marginal RM0.6362/kWh tariff, a continuous 20 W difference is about RM201 before cooling:
0.020 kW * 0.60 * 24 h * 365 d * 3 y * RM0.6362/kWh = RM200.65
This does not prove either card draws its TGP continuously or uses less energy per completed job. It explains why a RM270 Zotac premium can be operationally neutral, but the exact-model construction review does not show that Zotac is categorically more durable. Choose it for verified warranty, size or support features—not brand reputation. The Colorful remains the price/performance default if its local warranty is confirmed.
Quote and acceptance gates#
The quote must record exact part numbers and prices for every component, plus:
- whether the GPU price requires the complete build and whether every selected component qualifies;
- actual stock allocation, deposit, quote expiry, assembly/delivery cost and replacement policy;
- local GPU and SSD warranty length, registration deadline, claimant and service center;
- native PSU-to-GPU cable, no adapter, no mixed modular cable, and sufficient bend clearance;
- TiPlus9100 in
M2A_CPU, GPU at PCIe 5.0 x16, EXPO state stated explicitly; and - no substitutions without a revised written quote and re-check of this BOM.
Acceptance should record lspci link width/speed, NVMe negotiated link and SMART data, RAM capacity/speed,
GPU identity/VBIOS, full-load connector and memory temperatures, fan RPM/noise anomalies, wall power, and the
canonical Krea cold/warm suite. Use a support bracket supplied for the exact card. The second node is not a
copy until the first passes the 32/48/64 GB test and sustained thermal soak.
